I was too much of a coward to tell my ex I had lost interest. Instead, I started to send signals about my change of heart.

I showed up late on dates. I took a while before replying to her messages. I even flirted with other girls right in front of her. I’d talk about plans that clearly didn’t involve her. And when we were alone together, I’d dream out loud about how I wanted to travel, to experience more than “just this” from life.
